Matt VanSoest serves as designer for Ancon Construction. Matt is a Ball State grad where he earned his Bachelor of Architecture in 2008 and his MA Architecture in 2010 with a concentration in Educational Architecture and Urban Design.
As a designer for Ancon Construction Matt prides himself on listening to the owner’s specific needs to develop early concept building concepts and unique design ideas. Matt uses the latest CAD software to prepare renderings including site feasibility plans, site plans, floor plans, elevations, details and utilizes 3D computer modeling to help our customers visualize their project. Matt works in partnership with our project managers and estimators during the pricing phase to provide alternative details and value engineering to keep the project on budget and reduce change orders. Another part of Matt’s job that is seldom mentioned but plays a crucial role in the success of a project is performing building code reviews. By starting a project knowing the requirements it makes the project much smoother through final construction documents and state/local permit submittal processes. Matt has over 12 years of experience in the construction industry and has been with Ancon since 2006. In 2008 Matt was able to implement many design principles from his participation in a three year research initiative at Ball State into a state-of-the art charter school project in South Bend, IN. Other notable projects include a 100,000 square foot lean designed trailer manufacturing company, Inovateus Solar, multiple church projects and a large regional science center with an added children’s museum component. The picture to the left shows Matt engaged in some 3D modeling for a client and the pic on the right shows some of the foam board models Matt builds by hand to help clients better visualize their project.
Matt is married with one child and a second on the way. When not in design mode Matt is active in our community serving with YPN (Young Professionals Network) of Elkhart County, Chamber of Commerce, Bremen Kwanis Club and member of the Indiana Redevelopment Commission (Bremen). Outside of work and service Matt enjoys spending time with family at their lake house and cheering on Notre Dame and Ball State

Honeybaked Ham poised for move to Toscana Park in Mishawaka, IN

More than two decades after it opened, Honeybaked Ham is moving from its original location.
Owner LuAnn Smith VanDalsen has been approached about uprooting from the busy corner of Ironwood Drive and Edison Road in South Bend on multiple occasions since she brought the franchise to the area. It wasn’t until this year that she finally decided it was time.
Workers are pushing toward the finish line on construction on a new store at Toscana Park in Mishawaka, off Gumwood Road. Honeybaked Ham will anchor a section that includes Ziker Cleaners.

While Smith VanDalsen has been making do with a former Pizza Hut in her current space, this new location is entirely her creation. She designed it along with her daughters.
“It’s kind of like building your dream home,” Smith VanDalsen said this week, while touring the new space. “I’ve been over there for 25 years and I’ve had to get by with this and this didn’t quite work, so we changed it. This is our chance to build it just like we’ve wanted it.”
It’s a vision Smith VanDalsen is eager to see come fully to fruition.
Most everything in the building will be brand-new, from refrigeration units to counter space to a soda dispenser that will have 160-some different flavors. Smith VanDalsen noted a new hood in the glazing area of the kitchen. She said it’ll help churn out around 1,000 hams per day during the holiday season, a number that made this reporter raise his eyebrows.
But moving to Toscana Park isn’t just about more efficient production. Smith VanDalsen sees other advantages, like getting closer to her customer base and creating a more café feel, where people will want to come have lunch and spend some time.
Smith VanDalsen is consistently working to bridge the divide between people that buy hams and sides for family meals and those that stop in for lunch on a regular basis.
“You will see people come back year after year and they’ll get a sandwich every other day,” she said. “They’ll never come get a ham. Or you’ll see people get a ham year after year and they’ll literally stand at the counter and say, ‘Hmm, I didn’t know you did sandwiches.’”
In fact, Honeybaked has a full lunch menu. There’s a classic ham sandwich, a turkey bacon ranch, chicken salad and more. Soups and salads are available, plus all sorts of sides.
Deli with seating will be available to have lunch and dinner menu options.
The new location will cater to that lunch crowd in the form of more space, first of all. Smith VanDalsen said moving to Toscana Park doubles the store’s size. She’ll be able to seat between 25 and 30 people. Wifi availability encourages customers to hang around.
Smith VanDalsen also sees the area as more connected with people. She said the vast majority have expressed excitement about the move and the hope is being in a busy retail area will help Honeybaked tap into some foot traffic.
“There’s so many people that walk up and down this road,” Smtih VanDalsen said. “They come down to get ice cream. We want them to stop and get a sandwich, stop and get a drink, see what we’re about.”
Work is ongoing at Toscana Park, but Smith VanDalsen is targeting either late this month or the first week of November for opening.

Ancon Construction is putting the finishing touches on the newest ground up Aldi location in Elkhart, IN. The new location is along County Road 6 near Cassopolis Street where the former Ryan’s Steakhouse used to be. Signage is being installed and the finishing touches are underway for the next couple of weeks as we gear up for the grand opening.
This will be the third Aldi project that Ancon Construction will have completed in the last eight months. The new Warsaw location and the expansion of the Goshen location on US 33 were completed this past month.

Aldi has committed to providing fresh organic food and their re-brand is paying off. A whole new wave of customers in the form of millennials are shopping at Aldi further pushing their growth.
