Start-up aluminum company investing $17.5M in new plant, equipment

Start-up aluminum company investing $17.5M in new plant, equipment

November 9, 2021 – Indiana-based Aluminum Insights announces its $17.5 million investment in a new, state-of-the art aluminum extrusion facility in Syracuse, Indiana. The company’s equipment will be installed in a new 76,000-square-foot building, which features 500 kilowatts of rooftop solar and eight acres of native grassland and trees surrounding the plant. This investment will enable the company to serve a select group of customers in the Upper Midwest to support their extrusion needs, integrate seamlessly into their supply chain, and partner in innovation.

The extrusion press, made by Italy-based Presezzi Extrusion Group, is a world-class, 2,920-ton, 8-inch press line that includes the latest in automation and mechanical technology and advanced safety features. In addition to the highly automated press line, Aluminum Insights operates several CNC fabrication work cells that include routing, cutting and machining of extrusions.

Based on Aluminum Insights’ job creation plans, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) committed an investment of $825,000 in the form of incentive-based tax credits. These tax credits are performance-based, meaning the company is eligible to claim incentives once Hoosiers are hired and investments are made.

“Bringing equipment of this caliber to a new facility designed specifically for this purpose will enable us to operate at a very high level from inception.” said Jeff Miller, Aluminum Insights CEO. “For those in our surrounding communities interested in learning something new, this business creates unique opportunities to be part of a world-class team and world-class extrusion operation.”

Miller also expressed gratitude to IDEC, the Town of Syracuse, and the Kosciusko Economic Development Corporation (KEDCO) for their assistance in making the Syracuse Technology Park the location of choice for this operation.

Site construction is underway, led by Ancon Construction. Installation of the extrusion equipment will begin in early January and is expected to be fully operational in April 2022.

Local GHS Student Lands Career at Ancon Construction

Local GHS Student Lands Career at Ancon Construction

On June 1, 2021, Goshen High School senior Joseph Rodes signed a contract to work for Ancon Construction. Joseph was fully trained for his job during high school and was well-prepared to step immediately into his new career. As a student, Joseph took Building Trades and all the construction courses offered, along with Civil Engineering & Architecture and Engineering Design & Development. One advantage of training for a job you can begin after graduation is that you start earning a salary immediately, without acquiring large student loans.

“I enjoy working with the great people at Ancon. They have taught me many useful skills that I can apply even outside of work. I’m glad I had the opportunity to join the team.”  – Joseph Rodes, Ancon Construction Laborer

“Joseph is doing an outstanding job. He’s a quick learner, prompt and a hard worker!” – Don Carrico, Ancon Director of Safety and Operations

Ancon hopes to sign many more students out of high school in the near future!

Meet Our Interns

Meet Our Interns

Ancon Construction has established a great relationship with Purdue University and its Center for Career Opportunities (CCO). Purdue has a world-renowned BCM (Building Construction Management) and BCE (Building Construction Engineering) program.

We hired two interns for the summer through Purdue University, Josuel Sanchez and Neil Terrell. Both will be spending time in the field with superintendents and in the office with project managers, business development, and our design team. They will learn how each department works as a team to help deliver our client’s vision and make it a reality.

Josuel Sanchez is a graduate of Goshen High School and will be a senior at Purdue University-Lafayette this fall. His goal is to become a superintendent. At Goshen High School, Josuel earned his 3-year Varsity Letters in football and track. He set a school record in the 300-meter hurdles. As a Purdue University Running Club member, Josuel set club records in the 60-, 110-, and 400-meter hurdles and the 4×100 and 4×400 meter relays. Josuel enjoys working out, playing video games, sports, spending time with friends, and grilling outside.

Neil Terrell is a graduate of Elkhart Memorial High School and will be a sophomore at Purdue University, West Lafayette, studying Construction Engineering and Management. Neil completed several college classes while in high school and completed sophomore-level courses this past year. Neil enjoys running, traveling, biking, and two recent interests in his leisure time: sporting clays and golf.

Announcing Retirement and New President

Announcing Retirement and New President

Goshen, Indiana, February 22nd, 2021 — Ancon Construction’s board of directors proudly announces Doug VonGunten as its new President. VonGunten has over 25 years of experience in the construction industry, including in leadership positions in the past. He succeeds John Place, retiring after 26 years with Ancon.

“Doug will be an exceptional President at Ancon, by continuing the things that have set our company apart and by leading the organization to achieve even more success,” said John Place, President and Board Chair. “Doug’s personality and perseverance will serve him well in his new role, and I am looking forward to working with him for the next six months during the transition period.”

Before being named President, VonGunten started with Ancon in July 2006 as a Project Manager. He has most recently served as Senior Project Manager and Corporate Secretary on the Ancon Board of Directors. Doug is a lifelong resident of Middlebury with his wife, Jolene, and children, Jack, Garrett, and Molly. Aside from his work at Ancon, Doug finds many ways to serve and give back to the community. He is a member and Past President of Goshen Noon Kiwanis, serves on the Apprenticeship Committee for the local chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors apprenticeship program, and is an active member of his church Walnut Hill Mennonite in Goshen. Doug is also President of the Board of Directors for Ryan’s Place, a not-for-profit organization that provides grief support to children, teens, and families who have experienced the death of a family member or loved one.

VonGunten holds a B.S. degree in Business Administration, emphasizing management and marketing, from Manchester College, North Manchester, Indiana.

“It is a privilege to lead the Ancon team of employee-owners, and I’m excited about the challenge. The employee-owners make Ancon a great place to work, and I look forward to a very bright future together. Thank you to Andy Frech, the founder of Ancon, for his vision of Ancon 46 years ago, and to John Place, who has carried on that legacy.”

After 26 years with Ancon and the last 12 years as President, John Place is retiring. John plans to spend his retirement enjoying traveling, skiing, and continued involvement in various community organizations. He will also still be involved in key projects at Ancon and will continue to serve as Chairman of the Board.

“My 26 years at Ancon have been a blessing to my family and me. I have numerous relationships with Ancon employees, subcontractors, and clients that I will treasure as I move into a different phase of my life. I’m proud of the many successes that the Ancon team has enjoyed and look forward to seeing the company continue to grow. I was fortunate enough to have a career that not only challenged me but gave me a great deal of satisfaction. When I drive down almost any road in the area, there are usually several Ancon buildings that I had a part in constructing.”

VonGunten will assume the role of President in August. Please join the Board of Directors in congratulating John Place on his retirement and Doug VonGunten on his new role as President.

Introducing the new 105,000 Sq. Ft. Goodwill Gary, Indiana Campus

Introducing the new 105,000 Sq. Ft. Goodwill Gary, Indiana Campus

After breaking ground about two years ago, Goodwill Industries dedicated its new 105,000 square-foot campus in Gary, Indiana bringing 100 jobs. We are the proud builder of the new facility, an Excel charter school, a career center, and an outlet store.

Goodwill Industries searched a long time to find the right location for the first-ever Outlet store in the area. Get ready bargain shoppers; the outlet store is different from a traditional one. Items are brought in from other stores that did not sell and will be sold by the pound. You heard that right by the POUND! A unique concept and bargain shopping experience.

Not only is the new facility housing a unique bargain shopping experience, but it also has an Excel charter school, a free high-school for adults eighteen and older. The charter school is for adults seeking their high school diploma. There is on-site childcare for adults with children while they are in classes.

The career center provides free training to individuals to work on resumes, cover letters, interviewing skills, and job search opportunities.

The new facility brought jobs, compassion, education, and a great bargain shopping experience!
